Acid Reflux/GERD

Acid Reflux Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition in which the stomach contents (food or liquid) leak backward from the stomach into the esophagus (the tube from the mouth to the stomach). This action can irritate the esophagus, causing heartburn and other symptoms. Of course, heartburn has nothing to do with the heart.
One of the main risk factors for GERD include a hiatal hernia (a condition in which part of the stomach moves above the diaphragm, which is the muscle that separates the chest and abdominal cavities).

Common symptoms of Acid Reflux or GERD:

  • *The feeling that food may be left trapped behind the breastbone
  • *Difficult breathing or shortness of breath
  • *Heartburn or a burning pain in the chest (under the breastbone)
  • *Nausea after eating
  • *Difficulty swallowing

In our office, we get excellent results with GERD by doing a hiatal hernia adjustment. This is we gently, safely and effectively move the stomach back down into its normal position. We can do this without surgery and side-effects. In most cases, there is nothing wrong with the stomach, its just out of position. This is a mechanical problem that requires a mechanical solution.

A lot of patients are put on antacids for this condition. In our experience, most patients as they get over the age of 40 have a Hydrochloric Acid deficiency, not too much HCL. As a result of this, undigested food can and does rot in the stomach which produces lactic acid. This is the cause of the burning sensation that the patient feels. Therefore no one has an antacid deficiency. I usually recommend HCL with cooked food for patients over 40 to help them digest their food. This helps the body produce methyl groups and “youthifies” the cells.
It’s been said that you are what you eat. However in our office it’s you are what you eat, digest, assimilate and eliminate. Meaning you have to do all four.

Also, some patients need their mid back adjusted as the nerves from the mid back controls the functioning of the stomach.

With the treatment of acid reflux or GERD, it is also important to “cut out the crap.”
