A headache or cephalgia is a pain anywhere in the region of the head and neck. It can be a symptom of a number of different conditions of the head and neck. In our office, most headaches are not coming from the head, but are instead coming from the neck. Particularly the upper part of the neck-C-1 (Atlas) and C-2 (Axis). Why is this so? Because the brain tissue itself is not sensitive to pain because it lacks pain receptors. Meaning the brain cannot feel itself! Most headaches are being referred from the neck into the head and most headaches are structural in nature. These types of headaches respond beautifully to a chiropractic adjustment.
During a given year, 90% of people suffer from headaches. Primary headaches account for more than 90% of all headache complaints, and of these, episodic tension-type headache is the most common. These headaches also respond beautifully to a chiropractic adjustment. There is no such thing as a “normal everyday headache.” Why? Because to me, headaches are not normal! Also, headaches are not due to an aspirin deficiency. If my patients get a headache, they get an adjustment, which relieves their headache, instead of reaching for an aspirin.
It is estimated that women are three folds more prone than men to suffer from migraines. However, migraines appear to be experienced by 12% to 18% of the population. These types of headaches (migraines) also respond beautifully to a chiropractic adjustment. Usually C-1 and/or C-2. Recently we had a woman in our office who had been having migraines for 18 years. However, within a very short period of time with chiropractic adjustments, she now reports an 80% improvement.
There are different kinds and types of headaches. Some are occasional, some frequent, some are dull and throbbing, and some cause debilitating pain and nausea (migraines).
Research shows that chiropractic manipulation-the primary form of care provided by doctors of chiropractic- may be an effective treatment option for tension headaches and headaches that originate in the neck. So by adjusting the neck, you can help the head. Think of it as a bowling ball resting on top of a pool cue. The bowling ball is your skull, and the pool cue is the top cervical vertebrae-C-1, the Atlas vertebrae. This is usually the cause of most headaches, which response very effectively with an adjustment to C-1.
Other causes can be sinus pressure, which we treat in our office very effectively by treating the acupuncture points around the eyes and on the frontal and maxillary sinuses. Also sometimes the TMJ is involved, as there are 500 nerves that come down from the brain to the TMJ. Patients are helped with face, neck and head pain by adjusting the TMJ.
